THE ROYAL TREASURIES OF THE SPANISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA, 16TH-18TH CENTURIES
Presentation
This website contains information on income and expenditures registered by the royal treasuries of the Spanish Crown in America from the sixteenth century down to 1824. The data was collected by a research project directed by professors Herbert Klein y John J. TePaske and involved diverse collaborators. We wish to thank them for their contribution to historical research. The Excel tables we provide here allow researchers to elaborate their studies on Spanish American fiscal history. They are also of interest to teachers and students. We should note that new research on the Spanish American fiscal branches should complement our current data.
The fundamental source for this website is the volumes edited by HERBERT S. KLEIN AND JOHN J. TEPASKE, THE ROYAL TREASURIES OF THE SPANISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA, 16TH-18TH CENTURIES published by Duke University Press (1982-1990). We have also included the data from LOS INGRESOS Y EGRESOS DE LA REAL HACIENDA DE LA NUEVA ESPAÑA published by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (1986). We thank the authors for their permission to present this great database. The cooperation of Daniel Cosío Villegas Library at El Colegio de México is also essential to maintain the website online for use by the academic community.
We have converted the original fiscal series into Excel files that make them easier to consult and use. We hope that other academic institutions can establish links to facilitate widespread use, including, for instance, the Mexican Economic History Association (AMHE).
We have also included Klein and TePaske's introductions to the four volumes of The Royal Treasuries of the Spanish Empire in America, with their associated translations to Spanish.
The present website was possible thanks to the collaboration of many people, including Gustavo Alberto Ruiz Muñoz, Irasema Infante, Abelardo Herrero Pérezrul and Jorge Rolando Rodríguez Ariano. Erika Márquez was chiefly in charge of putting the files into Excel tables, and we thank her for this laborious task. Eduardo Rivero has designed the current search engine and most of the site. Ernest Sánchez Santiró has collaborated with his expert advice.
Sergio Serrano Hernández is the current academic coordinator of the webpage.
